In this tender and evocative novel about love, hope, familial devotion, betrayal, and sacrifice, Thrity Umrigar shows us two courageous women trying to navigate how to be true to their homelands and themselves at the same time. But the dual love stories of Honor are as different as the cultures of Meena and Smita themselves: Smita realizes she has the freedom to enter into a casual affair, knowing she can decide later how much it means to her. She also finds herself increasingly drawn to Mohan, an Indian man she meets while on assignment. While Meena’s fate hangs in the balance, Smita tries in every way she can to right the scales. As she follows the case of Meena-a Hindu woman attacked by members of her own village and her own family for marrying a Muslim man-Smita comes face to face with a society where tradition carries more weight than one’s own heart, and a story that threatens to unearth the painful secrets of Smita’s own past. Indian American journalist Smita has returned to India to cover a story, but reluctantly: long ago she and her family left the country with no intention of ever coming back. In this riveting and immersive novel, bestselling author Thrity Umrigar tells the story of two couples and the sometimes dangerous and heartbreaking challenges of love across a cultural divide.

Vallotton seems to have been both captivated by the capital’s boundless energy and conscious of the tensions that lay just beneath the surface. But it was also a hotbed of political unrest and social upheaval. It was the centre of the art world and a hub for scientific innovation. Vallotton became a master of the art of woodcut and he was commissioned to produce illustrations for journals and newspapers, including the influential La Revue Blanche.īelle Epoque Paris was prosperous and dynamic, brimming with fashion, fun and creativity. They admired Japanese woodblock prints, and their work was characterised by flattened figures, strong outlines and bold colours by empty spaces and decorative patterns. They sought to convey emotion rather than just to record reality. In the 1890s he associated with the circle of artists known as the Nabis (Prophets), whose number included Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard. Aged 16 he settled in Paris, at first to study and then to practice art. Vallotton was born into a puritanical protestant family in Lausanne in 1865. I recently attended an exhibition of the work of Swiss artist Felix Vallotton. Through studying and objectively analysing his trilogy of films (Maqbool, Omkara and Haider) with a close reference to Shakespeare corresponding plays (Macbeth, Othello and Hamlet) respectively, the paper aims to highlight the nexus between the culture and how human emotions remain consistent despite it. This research paper explores the works of Vishal Bhardwaj in his attempt to adapt Shakespeare into Indian cinema. This has inspired various filmmakers to not only find inspiration from his work but also attempt to rejuvenate its artistic soul by touching it with their auteur. His grasp on how humans respond coupled with ghosts, murderous villains and many fancy soliloquies continue to find their place in different cultures all around the world. Shakespeare's tragedies are simple to understand yet at the same time. Taking on a broad range of topics, including suburban sprawl, racial identity, and youth activism, Wimsatt (a graffiti artist himself) uses a kaleidoscopic approach that combines stories, cartoons, interviews, disses, parodies, and original research to challenge the suburban mindset wherever it's found: suburbs and corporate headquarters, inner cities and housing projects, even in hip-hop itself. Book excerpt: Should graffiti writers organize to tear up the cities, or should they really be bombing the 'burbs? That's the question posed by William Upski Wimsatt in his seminal foray into the world of hip-hop, rap, and street art, and the culture and politics that surround it. For as she optimistically maintains, "Changing how we see images is clearly one way to change the world," and film criticism is important because it "forces people to see differently." hooks attempts to intervene in mainstream cinema in a way that "challenges and changes the structures of white supremacist domination" and this collection of her writings highlights the one-dimensionality of black characters, the ghettoization of black filmmakers, and the marginality of black cinema in historical and critical studies of film. But since her students claim to learn most of what they know about race, sex, and class from the movies, writing film criticism is something hooks feels she simply can't afford not to do. Bell hooks is the first to admit that film criticism written by people who aren't film scholars is usually viewed with suspicion.
